i've seen an increase in posts about bootlegged figures/plushies/etc.
and a few of them are people saddened that they bought bootlegged figures.
now, some of us buy bootlegs for funny additions to a collection, or because some are even really good. its not a good thing to make these people think they can sell these items but...sadly, they can. i've even seen bidwars erupt over these terrible lots of bootlegs. these could be different from the picture or even painted with toxic paint (thanks to grrrowly for reminding me).... you leave a lot to chance when you buy a booty for any reason!
don't be fooled, don't be stupid. here are some simple steps you can take to check on a bootleg.
IS IT FROM HONG KONG/CHINA?
then it's a bootleg 99.9% of the time. nothing against china, but that is the country that makes these bootlegs that cause the issues. a few times though, these sellers appear to be located in american states (usually california). so here are some more steps.
ARE THE ITEMS IN A HUGE LOT OF FIGURES?
most likely bootlegged. really, its hard to avoid. i typed in "pokemon figure" to ebay. right now as i look, i see a total of ONE ITEM that is legit (a group of american figures in the original packaging). WOW.
ARE THE ITEMS SCARY BEYOND ALL REASON? DISCOLORED? MUTATED? UGLY?
bootlegs. dont just look at the pokemon you want - look at all of them. at least ten of them in a big lot will be horrifying, nightmare inducing. usually this number is around 75% mutants.
DOES THE PACKAGE HAVE CHINESE WRITTEN ON IT?
BOOOTLEG!!! but how can you tell chinese from japanese? look over some katakana and hiragana on the internet for a while, maybe learn some, and learn to tell it apart from kanji. learn to read it if you want - these are basic japanese characters and theres only about as much in each set as in our own alphabet, so why not learn? then you can use yahoo japan or google more easily when looking for your fav pokemon!
WATCH OUT THOUGH. lately some bootleggers got wise and have put japanese on their packages. this is usually TERRIBLE japanese tho, laden with the mistakes chinese people learning japanese make. when in doubt? ask me! i speak fluent japanese and the majority of foreign kids in my school are chinese kids (a really great bunch of kids!). i had six required japanese classes with them, i KNOW the mistakes chinese will make at japanese. and if i cant figure it out - ill check with the japanese person i live with!
THIS ITEM LOOKS OFFICIAL BUT ITS MISSING A BODY PART! WHAT?
this was recently posted... a leafeon with no leaf. this is actually NOT a bootleg! me and gogoicarus know this because of our learnings. ECTRANSFER on ebay is a chinese person who works in the toy factory in china that makes some pokemon plush, and takes(steals?) then sells the factory's reject plush on ebay. these are real things ... but they were rejected by pokemon company for a reason. might be interesting to add to a collection... but thats up to you! (BTW, these are usually pokedolls).
this just in; "enforever" also seems to be participating in the missing body part phenomena!
I SWEAR THIS ITEM LOOKS LEGIT...ITS FROM HONG KONG, BUT IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD!
heck... this happens! the thing to look for is; is this item listed on ebay about a gazillion times? then its probably booty. before the new "latias and raichu happy house" appeared on ebay, the major "looks legit bootleg" of raichu was this plushie (who turns into pikachu)
who is actually a bootleg of this official plushie (who turns into a pokeball)
remember, bootlegs are just molds or copies of real figures! sometimes they turn out quite good, even if they are a different size or color.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST....USE YOUR COMMON SENSE, AND WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK PKMNCOLLECTORS - BUT ONLY IF YOU REALLY CAN'T TELL!
come on people. bootlegs arent too hard to pick out. if you really want to avoid them, just check off these things on the list. if you honestly have something that meets nothing on this list but you still suspect a bootleg, then ask us. please don't make an ass of yourself and post daily asking about ugly figures from hong kong in big lots.
hope this helped! :) CHECK OUT THE COMMENTS FOR MORE HELPFUL TIPS!!!!
